Sisu is the Finnish word for extreme resilience, courage, and determination, especially in highly challenging conditions. Finland’s harsh landscape, long periods without the sun rising in the winter, and constant sunlight in the summer make it difficult to sustain mental and physical well-being. Having sisu can mentally keep you strong.
The Finnish word pinpoints the familiar notion of perseverance in the face of adversity and steady determination at its mildest iteration.
What does Sisu have to do with beeswax?
Bees have long been a symbol of perseverance. Their steady ability to work as a hive to achieve mass amounts of organization while enduring habitat loss and the recent effects of chemicals and pesticides is sisu in action.

SISU Cnadle Co. was founded in 2024 by me, Jayne Ellen Clark, a maker and marketer who believes small actions can make a big difference. No matter how off course life may steer, little refuges can significantly positively affect our bodies and minds. After struggling to find toxin-free, naturally made candles for my home, I began to study the benefits of burning unscented beeswax and the fascinating history of beeswax lighting the modern world before electricity.
